Smh.com.au is a national newspaper & news source in Australia

Title

The Sydney Morning Herald: national, world, business, entertainment, sport and technology news from Australia's leading newspaper.

The Herald's milestones on the World Wide Web

April 25, 1995: smh.com.au is born with the launch of Computers Online, the web version of the Herald's Computers & Communications section. Described as “a precursor to an eventual electronic newspaper”, it tracks the emerging medium.

September 15, 1995: The Herald's entertainment section, Metro, is live online, expanding our presence on the web. Metro carries searchable listings of shows and gigs, a bunch of web extras and opportunities for readers to submit their own reviews.

Feb 5, 1996: In a first for Australian newspapers, the Herald makes the best of its election coverage available on the net. Readers can have their say with 'E-letters to the Editor', there are full-colour graphics and photo “albums” and, as a bonus for net users, extra stories that have not appeared in the paper.

March 25, 1996: The Herald is now running a daily news page on the web under the logo 'News on the Net'. It includes a selection of national, world, business and sport news, editorials and columns. The addition of a daily news service makes the SMH site the biggest and most comprehensive of any newspaper in Australia.

Mid-1998: With rights secured to wire copy, a comprehensive ‘Breaking News’ service kicks off. smh.com.au is no longer just an online version of the newspaper.

November 1998: A summer of live cricket. Every day of every Ashes Test on home soil, we present over-by-over coverage. And viewers can send in e-mail messages to be posted immediately on the live box.

September 1999: Extensive site redesign and re-branding as smh.com.au signals a major shift away from the core print product to target a younger, more contemporary audience. Soon, we have a fulltime multimedia reporter, producing original online content.

October-November 1999: Our new dedicated rugby union site, rugbyheaven distinguishes itself at the World Cup in the UK and France. We have two online reporters at the stadiums, filing throughout the tournament, culminating in a live call of the Wallabies' triumph at Cardiff.

September 2001: Fast-breaking and in-depth coverage of the 9/11 terror attack in the US cements smh.com.au's reputation as a major web news force, drawing praise from net users from around the world.

March-April 2003: The invasion of Iraq by the US and its allies divides the nation. Traffic to smh.com.au quadruples.

August 2004: Our Athens Olympics site revs up as Australia sleeps. It features live reports filed straight to the site by Herald journalists and video presentations by online staff on the spot.
