During the American Revolutionary times Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay published a series of essays supporting the ideas of a free American government. They did this under the pseudonym "Publius". These papers later were known as the Federalist Papers from which all American school children study. They wrote under a pseudonym to protect their very lives from retribution.
