StBernardProject.org is about rebuilding homes & lives in post-Katrina New Orleans
St. Bernard Project
The mission of the St. Bernard Project (SBP) is to create housing opportunities so that Hurricane Katrina survivors can return to their homes and communities. The St. Bernard Project, a nonprofit, community-based organization carries out its mission through three primary programs: Rebuilding Program, Center for Wellness and Mental Health and Senior Housing Program.
SBP History
Liz McCartney and Zack Rosenburg founded the St. Bernard Project in March 2006 after spending time volunteering in St. Bernard, following the Hurricane Katrina storm of 2005. While working side-by-side the many resilient residents of St. Bernard, they became all too aware of the community's needs. Lack of resources and financial limitations, following the Katrina devastation, would undoubtedly prevent people from returning to their homes. There was an overwhelming and ongoing need to help the proud people of New Orleans rebuild their lives & homes. Zach and Liz returned to St. Bernard Parish in June 2006 and rebuilt their first client’s home in August 2006.
Behind the strength of a dedicated team, collaboration, and donations, including countless hours of volunteer work, the St. Bernard Project has evolved into a tremendous healing and rebuilding organization.

The St. Bernard Project has rebuilt over 340 homes, however there are still more than 400 homeowners & families that live in FEMA trailers, whom cannot afford to rebuild. The SBP has a variety of programs where indivduals, companies, and organizations have the opportunity to help, donate, volunteer, and GET INVOLVED!
Rebuilding Program: The St. Bernard Project rebuilds houses for senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and families with children who do not have the money to pay contractors. People that can afford to purchase the materials are offered labor help from supervised volunteers. The St. Bernard Project pays for materials and supplies when clients are unable.
Mental Health & Wellness Program: The St. Bernard Project started its mental health program in January 2009 by partnering with the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. The SBP's Center for Wellness and Mental Health (CWMH) provides evaluation, treatment and support for residents of New Orleans suffering from mental health issues, related to post Katrina Storm and Oil Spill issues.
Oil Spill Response: The St. Bernard Project has expand mental health services and created additional jobs in order to help the families of fishermen and people affected by the BP oil spill.
Good Work, Good Pay (GWGP): GWGP, is the St. Bernard Projects newest program, where returning war veterans and other local underpaid and unemployed individuals are hired to build and/or rebuild affordable housing units. Employees are paid livable, union-level wages, and offered full benefits.
Special Builds: The St. Bernard Project has a variety of annual sponsored rebuilds and special events.
New Orleans Neighborhood Stabilization Phase 2 (NSP2): "SBP is part of the New Orleans Neighborhood Stabilization Phase 2 (NSP2) Consortium (NOC Consortium). The New Orleans Consortium is a partnership between 11 experienced non-profits, the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) and a green building consultant, Green Coast Enterprises. The NOC Consortium was awarded $29.7M to conduct comprehensive redevelopment through the rehabilitation and new construction of new homes throughout a variety of neighborhoods across the city."
