- The Chinese first perfected bells as musical instruments thousands of years ago. Evidence of bells and ringing has been found in Himalayan monasteries, Hindu temples, and Peruvian temples well before Europeans visited. There is an Assyrian bell over three thousand years old on display in a Berlin museum. In the fifth century, monks were being summoned by bells.
