Door County Computer

Description

About Us:

Door County Computer, the premier computer repair and Internet service provider in Door County, provides Internet connectivity through the company’s OnLine Door County service, but is affectionately known as RickNet to many of its 3,500 dial-up users and much newer wireless broadband users. In business since 1991, the company has become the main source of computer repair in Door County — as well as e-mail and Internet services.

History:

Door County Computer was the first commercial Internet business in the county, connecting local schools to the Internet in late 1994, and then businesses and individual computer users. Established first in Ephraim by owners Rick and Joan Gordon, the company moved to larger quarters in Juddville, expanding its computer repair operations as well as its Internet Café. “Many tourists need Internet services, and we offer it at $10 an hour,” said Rick Gordon. “If we’re fixing someone’s computer and they need access, there’s no charge.” The Internet Café offers both PC and Mac systems, hookups for laptops, and scanning, printing and faxing capabilities, making it the most technologically up-to-date such facility in the County.

In a rural area like Door County, Internet access is always a more challenging issue than in an urban area, where cable (DSL) hook-ups are almost always available. In contrast to metropolitan areas, many Door County residents live far from a highway, and while it is always possible to get Internet access through a standard telephone line, high-speed Internet access by means of cable is not always feasible in certain locations.
