There is substantial sympathy among educators, students and the general public for the substitution of animal experimentation in educational curricula by animal-free (alternative) models, provided primary learning goals can still be achieved. Over recent years there have been considerable developments in alternatives and there is fair potential for technology-based alternatives in particular (e.g. computer-based simulations and videos) to have a real impact on the number of animals used in education. However, a low (compared to animal use for research), yet significant number of animals is still being used in laboratory classes and vocational training.
