Company History: McKesson All the Way
McKesson began its journey way back in 1833 in New York City’s financial district with McKesson and Charles Olcott opening a small drug import and wholesale shop. The shop sold botanical drugs, such as herbs, leaves, roots, bark, and vegetable extracts. After Olcott’s death in 1853, Robinson joined McKesson and the company was renamed as McKesson and Robins. They made huge profits and created McKesson Chemical Company later changing the name as Foremost- McKesson, Inc. in 1967. The company distributed alcoholic beverages, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, milk-based products, and processed water in the western half of the United States. From 1980 onwards, the company turned its attention towards investing in new technologies. In 1984, the company came to be called as McKesson Corporation. From this point onwards, the company strove to become the leader of healthcare supply management and information technologies. McKesson now offers innovative software solutions to a number of prestigious hospitals, healthcare units, retail outlets, payor, physician and homecare customers and long term care.

McKesson supplies more than one third of the medicines used in North America distributed through more than 25,000 outlets all over the country. McKesson’s business ranges through three segments.
Pharmaceutical Segment distributes ethical and proprietary drugs, health and beauty-care products. McKesson also undertakes manufacture and sales of automated pharmaceutical dispensing systems for retailers and medical managements; specialty pharmaceuticals solutions for manufacturers and biotech companies; patient and payor services, pharmacy services outsourcing; consulting and distributing first-aid products in the U.S.
McKesson’s Medical-Surgical Solutions segment supplies medical- surgical equipments, and provides logistic services too within the United States.
McKesson’s Provider Technologies segment is engaged in customized patient care; automation and strategic management software solutions; clinical and financial supply chain; and healthcare services outsourcing throughout North America, United Kingdom and other European Countries.
