Hello, my name is Laura. I am a natural mom and I live in Utah. In October 2002 I was feeling pretty lonely and frustrated because I was the only one I knew who parented this way. So I started Natural Mothering Utah, an organization that provides support, information, and playgroup activities to other natural Utah moms.

Membership is free (donations are appreciated). We use our email list to communicate with each other and set up events. It's a great group and you will find lots of support for your natural choices.

Natural mothering is mothering instinctively, in harmony as much as possible with nature and the biological order of things. Certain choices we make as mothers follow this natural course. Birthing without unnecessary drugs or interventions, birthing at home or in a free-standing birth center without interference are part of natural mothering. Leaving our children with the bodies they are born with (not circumcising them) is part of natural mothering. Cloth diapering is part of natural mothering because it's healthier for the environment and our babies. Observing our bodies' fertility signals through Natural Family Planning or the Fertility Awareness method are more in harmony with our biology than taking synthetic hormones to suppress fertility. Breastfeeding our babies "ecologically"--breastfeeding on demand, frequently throughout the day and night and limiting separation with our babies naturally suppresses fertility. Avoiding early solids and bottles and feeding our babies exclusively through breastfeeding is what nature designed...for most of the first year. Breastfeeding for the first several years of life and allowing your child to self-wean is part of natural mothering, too. Sometimes this means nursing a child throughout another pregnancy and tandem nursing after the new baby is born. Sleeping with our babies and wearing them on our bodies where they can feel our love and warmth are natural choices as well. Natural mothering also includes meeting our children's needs promptly (no letting our babies "cry it out") and parenting in a positive way rather than with punishments. Keeping our children with us and being their mentors as they learn to read, write, and discover the world around them is another natural choice. Preventing illness by eating good foods instead of vaccines and treating illness with homeopathic remedies or herbs rather than synthetic drugs is more harmonious with the way the body naturally works.
