OneWebDay (at OneWebDay.org) is one day a year (Sept. 22nd annually) when we all - everyone around the physical globe - can celebrate the Web and what it means to us as individuals, organizations, and communities. The first OneWebDay was on Sept. 22, 2006. The event is a global celebration of the collaborative, participatory nature of the web. As with Earth Day - an inspiration and model for OneWebDay - it’s up to the celebrants to decide how to celebrate. We encourage all celebrations! Collaboration, connection, creativity, freedom. By the end of the day, the Web should be just a little bit better than it was before, and we’ll be able to see our connection to it more clearly.

All across the globe, in small ways and big ways, people will be celebrating the internet on Sept. 22. Because the web runs on wires and uses machines, we forget that it’s fundamentally a social, human place. It’s changed the world in the last ten years; it’s helped families keep in touch, helped people find jobs, brought news close to home, and on and on. The web is worth celebrating. Because the web is made of people, it’s up to us to protect it — and not take it for granted. The idea behind OneWebDay is to create an Earth Day for the internet. It is a day to celebrate how important the web is to each of us.

How you can participate

OneWebDay is planning to create an historic event to mark the launch of OneWebDay—the largest global online photo collaboration resulting in a visualization of the web made up of photos posted by millions of people around the world. This visualization will show the power of online collaboration. OneWebDay is working with CNET Networks' Webshots (webshots.com), a global photo-sharing community, to make it easy for Web users globally to upload a digital photo and label it with “onewebday.”

There is a web site (http://onewebday.org) which is a clearinghouse for OneWebDay online projects and news. Flickr pictures and posts tagged OneWebDay can be seen on the site, which has a blog and a wiki aimed at encouraging participation. Video tagged OneWebDay and uploaded to blip.tv (a free hosting service) will be aggregated by Dabble.com.

We’re also suggesting that people take one web-related action on OneWebDay that helps someone else. Suggestions:

  • teach someone to use an application (blog, wiki, Flickr) that is new to them
  • start a group blog about an issue you care about
  • help a grandparent get in touch with a grandchild online
  • help a young student find a new educational resource online
  • start a story online that other people add to
  • go to a local senior center and volunteer to help people get online
  • go to a local school and volunteer to help get better equipment in place
  • talk to your town about getting free wireless access in place
  • post a tribute to a friend online – interview him/her about his/her life
  • have a contest with a friend to collect and display the five most amazing things you can find online
  • go to a public wireless place and strike up a conversation about the web with someone near you
  • send a recipe to a friend and then make dinner together
