In 1806, Lewis and Clark found a prosperous village of the Cathlapotle People in the area now encompassing the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. After the Civil War, the Ridgefield area built up rapidly, and was known as Union Ridge. In 1909, the town of Ridgefield was incorporated.
