Randy Allnatt, Visual Impairment Services Team Coordinator at the Department of Veterans Affairs, was a benefits counselor for veterans who are blind or visually impaired. As a VIST Coordinator, he assisted in identifying and selecting appropriate assistive aid devices for those who are eligible for such care. While riding home from work with fellow VA employee Anthony Mariano, he asked if there was any assistive aid device that would permit visually or cognitively patients to access the information on their prescription bottles. Randy, who has been blind since birth, related his experience of taking the wrong medication due to his inability to read the label. As a result, he experienced an adverse medical event that landed him in the emergency room. He knew of patients at the VA with similar experiences and was searching for a solution for himself and others.
In January 1995, Anthony R. Mariano and Randy Allnatt began their search for assistive aid technology that would make prescription label information available to people who are visually impaired. Over nearly five years of evaluation, three separate technologies were developed and tested. In August of 2000, testing was conducted at the Stratton VA Medical Center at Albany New York. The thirty blind patients who volunteered to evaluate the technologies overwhelmingly identified the MedivoxRx ® disposable talking bottle as their preferred choice.
