- Today the town of San Felipe is about 25,000 most of the time and can go up to 90,00 for special events. Founded as a fishing port in 1916 San Felipe still has a thriving shrimp fleet. Tourism has taken over as the town's greatest source of income for the local people. San Felipe has it's Mexican airs, but it's a tourist-oriented beach town at heart, complete with beautiful warm sandy beaches, and vendors selling sculptures, blankets and shells.
