Description

In 1997, the massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) genre had just emerged from its text based form into full 3D with the release of Ultima Online, but no one was prepared for what would come next. In 1999 the world of gaming changed forever when a title called EverQuest quietly appeared in stores. EverQuest became a runaway hit and everyone was talking about the game that was played over the internet with hundreds of thousands of other people from all over the world. The name “EverQuest”became so well known that the game was featured in many mass media publications and even appeared on the cover of TV Guide. For years it continued to win industry awards and is still a solid financial success today for developer and publisher Sony Online Entertainment.

With the success of EverQuest, it is no surprise that over the years many other successful MMOGs have emerged. Studies show that most gamers prefer to play with other people and the classic MMOGs fulfill that desire with much of the content based on real-time cooperation and competition. Sigil Games Online was born from the idea that these games could be created even better. Founded in 2002 by Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler, key figures in the development of EverQuest, Sigil plans to be a driving force in the continued evolution of this unique genre.

“If you’ve got the talent to be a songwriter, for example, then it just flows. That’s what you do,” said Jeff Butler, President of Sigil Games Online. “For me, EverQuest was the just tip of the iceberg. At some point in time my ideas will run out, but no time soon.”
