The direct ancestor of Supervalu is Winston and Newell Company formed from the joined companies created by the founders of B.S. Bull and Company (which was a dry goods wholesaler serving Minneapolis, St. Paul and the surrounding rural settlements that appeared after Hugh G. Harrison’s providing its basic capital in 1870).
In 1924 the first modern grocery warehouse in Minneapolis is built by the Winston and Newell Company and two years later the Company purchases trucks designed for delivery helping the distribution business in Minnesota; the company’s motor truck is the first in the area and precedes the nowadays semi-trailers.
