Description

I just have never had any luck at all with men. I have no idea why I've always been attracted to needy and irresponsible men with serious emotional and psychological issues. Is it the part of me that needs to feel needed?

Let me explain just what I mean. When I was twenty years old I married Barry Morse. My Grandmother cried. She said, "Colleen, if you marry him you're going to ruin your whole life." Of course, since I was only twenty and thought I knew everything, I didn't listen to her. I married him anyway and broke both her heart and my own. Of course the marriage never had a chance in hell of working. We were both far too young. Not only that, but he was totally irresponsible and was heavily into drugs and alcohol. I thought he would change.

We had met on the West Bank of Minneapolis when we were both hippie flower children. It was 1968. We married in May of 1970. I was six months pregant. Since I was carrying a child that I wanted very much, I quit drugs immediately. I thought my husband would do so, as well. I was wrong. Not only did he refuse to quit drugs, he also became a very heavy drinker. He was rarely home and he cheated on me with other women constantly. In the first six months of our marriage, I had dinner on the table at the time he was to be home from work. I had the table set romantically with tablecloth and candles. He rarely showed up to eat it. Once he went to empty the garbage and came back three days later. The garbage can was not that far away. Whenever I confronted him, his response was always, "I have places to go, things to do, people to see." Then he decided he didn't like to work, so he began making a history of quitting his jobs. My pastor told me to quit my job, and then he would have to work. I didn't know if that was sound advice, but it was my pastor speaking, so I quit my job. That didn't do a thing; Barry still did not work a steady job, and everytime he did make money he spent it on drugs and alcohol rather than rent and groceries. I often had to turn to my Grandmother and my Aunt Bernadine for financial help.
