9-26-2007 - As a longtime fan of Team Portugal’s Joaquim Rodrigues; seeing him take the hole-shot in his MXON Saturday qualifier, then go on to finish third (behind Tim Ferry and Michael Byrne), had me stoked. I have always admired Joaquim’s story of a Portuguese teenager full of determination and heart coming to America to race motocross. One of the friendliest riders in the pro pits, 2007 had been a rebuilding year for Rodrigues after missing the entire 2006 season due to lingering injuries. Picked up at the very last minute by the Red Bull KTM team for a race by race contract this summer, J-Rod showed us he still had the speed in spite of a late season supercross injury. I caught up with Rodrigues Sunday morning to congratulate him on his Saturday qualifier ride, only to find him with a very heavily stitched up thumb. Later in his first moto, Rodrigues would go down hard in turn one and retire for the day. In this brief interview I was surprised to learn that Rodrigues was not yet signed for 2008. more
