A speculum is introduced into the vagina and the cervix is visualized. A pap smear is taken and subsequently a cotton swab is introduced into the cervical canal and another smear is taken to rule out cancer in the cervical canal. The samples are sent to the clinical pathology lab for analysis. The pelvic exam is needed to screen for ovarian cancer.
