We are not done with Granular Recent Changes - we are done with SpecificRecentChanges - which is good enough for now. If we can prove that this is a good thing for community growth, then we will want to address granular again. ~~ MarkDilley | We are not done with Granular Recent Changes - we are done with SpecificRecentChanges - which is good enough for now. What (summary)
Filtered RC for a specific category tag or by badge.
Example PortlandTech
- Create a page (PortlandTech/RecentChanges) where all changes to any page tagged Category:PortlandTech are listed.
Why this is important
Critical to development and sustainability of communities on AboutUs. This is something that is being championed as a benefit to both the Content and Community teams as we try to build communities around aggregated content (like PortlandTech, or LASIK). It is also believed to be a boon to the Operations team as they can track changes to efforts like Venture Northwest 2007, both for internal reference and (potentially) as "needle moving" metrics in VC pitches.
DoneDone
- When all recent changes to any page tagged Category:PortlandTech are displayed and automatically updated on PortlandTech/RecentChanges, the Content Team will be happy.
- When a similar test has been constructed and approved by the Community Team.
Steps to get to DoneDone
Discussion
- Is this idea here to dynamically generate the page every time? So if a page gets added to the category after 10 days of edits, then I check PortlandTech/RecentChanges, will I see those edits in the past? TedErnst (talk) 16:36, 4 December 2007 (PST)
- Not sure. I think that would be valuable, but if it's a gating factor, not wholly necessary to get this off the ground from a Content team perspective. That said, the deeper this implementation, the better. Is this a feature that the Community team would like/need/require? -- TakKendrick 16:46, 4 December 2007 (PST)
- Ted, I'm happy to report that the way (see my note to Jason below) that Brandon and Stephen discovered today does appear to do this. I made a change to a page only to discover it wasn't listed in the Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:PortlandTech because it didn't have the correct category tag (oops). I then added the category and both edits appeared on the list, even though the other one came before it was in the category. Not a 100% perfect test, but pretty encouraging. -- TakKendrick
- I love the idea of portlandtech.aboutus.org being the place for dynamic recent changes. portlandtech.bowling.leaves.aboutus.org as the place for those keywords recent changes. Because I worry about taking the space PortlandTech/RecentChanges - but maybe that space is just occupied for recent changes. ~~ MarkDilley
- I agree with Mark, this sounds like it should be a special page. I nominate Special:CategoryRecentChanges/PortlandTech Jason Parmer 13:40, 6 December 2007 (PST)
- Looks like Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:PortlandTech is actually available in the software. Need to figure out how big of a resource draw it is and if we can turn on RSS for it. ~~ MarkDilley
- Jason: After investigating a bit today, Brandon and Stephen determined that Special:Recentchangeslinked/Category:Foo pulls pretty close to what we're looking for based on any category. As Mark points out, we're not sure how much of a drag this will be on the system, but we're hopeful thus far with it. This might allow us to close out or greatly reduce this task after a couple days of playing with it. -- TakKendrick
We are not done with Granular Recent Changes - we are done with SpecificRecentChanges - which is good enough for now. If we can prove that this is a good thing for community growth, then we will want to address granular again. ~~ MarkDilley
