Hotmail.com started in the early or maybe middle of the 1990's, when the internet just started to become popular among common people. This site and RocketMail.com were probably the only two sites that offered free web based email accounts. At that time, it was ridiculed by some experts because common people were charged by minutes or hours when they use the internet. Those experts thought that it won't be successful.
This company remained an independ company long after rocketmail.com was sold to yahoo. It was probably not profitable. In the end, it was sold to MSN.com. Unlike its counter part RocketMail.com which quickly forgotten by most people after it was sold to Yahoo!, this particular domain remains active and popular even today. It was probably due to the fact that it attracted many customers while it was an indepent company.
Hotmail and Live.com
Recently Microsoft has announced plans to retool their web application empire under a collective brand name Windows Live/Live.com. Many of the functions of previous Microsoft online services (like MSN.com and Hotmail.com) are being folded into the service gradually, along with newly planned applications like clipboards, contacts, folder sharing and more being implemented over time.
