History

USAA was founded by a group of military officers in the year 1922 under the name United States Army Automobile Association. Within a period of one year, the company nearly went bankrupt. However, with a series of events and being guided by a new able leadership, the company rapidly managed to stabilize and expand itself with a solid footing to serve all military officers as the United Services Automobile Association. As early as 1941, the membership of the association exceeded 22,000. The company opened its New York Office in 1948. By 1956, a new headquarters was completed in San Antonio. In 1973, the membership was opened to National Guard and Reserves. In 1983, USAA federal savings bank and USAA brokerage services were established. In 1997, the membership was extended to enlisted personnel.

One of the earliest buildings of the company is in Grayson Street across from the Quadrangle of Fort Sam Houston and USAA always had its headquarters in San Antonio, TX. Later the company moved to Hildebrand & Broadway near Brackenridge Park. In the late 1970s, USAA once again moved to its current headquarters in Northwest San Antonio.
