OnMessageSearchResults

What (summary)

  • Title from "domain.com - AboutUs" to "domain.com - AboutUs Wiki Page"
  • Paragraph extracted from the page to display the results is more informative
  • example: GoogleSearchText.png

Why this is important

Currently search results in google show navigational structure rather than the useful content about the domain. Figure out why and perhaps lay out the page differently so that more useful information shows up instead.

DoneDone

  • Google summaries better reflect the content of pages, to the degree we find possible. Navigation boilerplate is no longer as prominent in the summary if possible.

Steps to get to DoneDone

  • Research how Google extracts the summaries from a page
  • Assess and make modifications to skin to better reflect what we want
  • Check google after several days to ensure that a preset set of pages have better results after the changes.

Discussion

MediaWiki:Retrievedfrom should be what you're looking for, Mark. -Stephen Judkins 16:14, 26 November 2007 (PST)

  • Stephen, I didn't see any results in google, although it may have been to early to see, but TedErnst did find the message at the bottom of the search page. :-( So I just removed it.

This has been urged by many folks in AboutUs for over a year. Why the rush to getting it settled when there wasn't a consensus on what the title should be? ~~ MarkDilley

Mark, is the year-long conversation on the wiki anywhere? If not, could we re-create here? What are the other options, besides the one chosen ("AboutUs Wiki Page")? TedErnst | talk 14:12, 18 November 2007 (PST)
Sorry, I didn't realize there had been a year long discussion on this. It's a quick change, so even if we decide something better, nothing is really lost given that we can modify it easily. Also, most anything is likely to be better than the basic AboutUs text in the meantime. Am I missing something? - Ray | talk

Other use cases

  • Wizard of Oz
    • Search text is no where to be found
  • forced thesaurus
    • Search text is in meta description - this is exactly what I think we should have for at least one sentance

Jump to, search

This garble, I noticed in another wiki, GreenPolicy.us and was annoyed, now I notice it is part of Mediawiki.org in the source. I think that this may be a place to add a sentence about - us, in addition to the meta description from the reference above.
