About Seattle Spiel
Welcome. I am Matthew Baldwin, Seattle denizen and author of the weblog defective yeti. I am also a game enthusiast, and used to maintain the website acesup.com.
I created Seattle Spiel for two reasons. First, I wanted to provide game-players in the Seattle area a resource to find one another, organize gaming events, and keep abreast of the local gaming scene. Second, I wanted to create a place where Seattleites new to the hobby could learn more about Contemporary Games. If you fall into the latter category, I'd encourage you to read on.
What Are Contemporary Games?
The games described on this site are sometimes referred to as "German boardgames," as Germany is often their country of origin. ("Spiel" is German for "game," hence the name "SeattleSpiel.") They are also called "Eurogames," "Contemporary" or "Modern" boardgames, or simply TGOOs (These Games Of Ours). But what truly distinguishes them is not the name, but certain characteristics that these game usually share. To wit:
