Description

Mamaroneck, N.Y. – It’s basically golf squared: all the difficulties and frustrations that the ordinary golfer faces on a regular course are made exponentially harder when on a U.S. Open setup – not in order to humiliate the best players in the world but, rather, "to identify them," as former USGA president Sandy Tatum said during the 1974 Open at Winged Foot.

Deep rough always has been integral to U.S. Opens. This year, however, the USGA has exercised a degree of mercy in that regard. Instead of maintaining rough of one uniform length, whether that’s a yard off the intermediate cut or 30 yards into Westchester County, the Championship Committee created two tiers of difficulty: one eight yards wide and another cut that extends to the spectator ropes. The first primary cut will be 3½ inches; the second at 5½ inches.

During Wednesday's practice round, Vijay Singh takes a swipe out of the rough. Many players were in favor of the USGA's decision to go with the tiered thick stuff. (John Mummert/USGA)
