Identify Conflict

Ideas:

  • Here we can discuss the proper means to identify conflicts especially before they get out of hand. By having staff and members of a resolution/mediation team be notified about identified possible conflict. By this manner these individuals will be able to interceed and ease tensions before they flare up.

Mediating Conflicts

Ideas:

  • Here we can discuss theways and means of resolution/mediation teams can manage any conflicts. I do have some ideas on how they could possibly work and be a great benefit to AboutUs. It would also be a good idea to "Index of Common Problems".

I think the idea of having a mediation team would be good. It can help reduce time spent by staff who have more important tasks. The community then can turn to a mediator who can look at both sides, offer a resolution and if needed they can take it to staff at that point. --User:DannyG 16:42, 8 September 2007 (PDT)

Is Conflict Mediation/Resolution Needed?

  • Here we can all collaborate as to If there exists a need to address conflict resolution as well if action needs/should to be taken into consideration.

Identification of Conflict Patterns

Controversial Material

Controversial Material can easily produce conflicts within the AboutUs community, this stems from a domain page that may have Adult content or controversial material. Pages that have adult content are currently handled by the addition of a flag. In this section we will identify some of the patterns that occured with some controversial material that has sparked debate as well as conflict.

Controversial material can be defined as: Disputable arguments between sides holding opposing views regarding material or ideas.

We need to consider how to prevent these conflicts before they begin, by addressing all sides of the contention, this may be possible by:

Examining if the "controversial material" is:
  • Illegal in nature
  • Harmful to the AboutUs community
Constructive ways to discuss controversial material:
  • Acknowledging that the material is potentially controversial material
  • Set forth very clearly the criteria with which establishes controversial material
Ideas to consider in curbing controversial conflict uprisings:
Level rating for sites in this genre and then create user poll system and community members can then judge for themselves without needing to write explanations in their comments

Negative Review

We do not want to encourage EditWars, they are non constructive expressions of views. They don't take into account listening to the other person. They are throw backs to the way that older internet technologies work. They drain enegry, etc...

We need to think about how to connect with each person, the person leaving the negative review and the person whos website is being negatively reviewed.

  1. reviewer - try to help make a constructive complaint
  2. website holder - try to help understand the Web 2.0 landscape, and that it is better to try and show off your reputation by answering constructively rather than trying to play whack-a-mole on the internet.
