After my longest hiatus ever (November 2004-March 2005), X-Tra Rant went live again around 3/14/2005. Just when I thought I was gonna get out for good, I got the bug again. I guess when you’ve been writing on a blog of some sort since late 1999, you can’t just get away from it. (My god, have I been writing a blog since then and STILL have no readers? Ah well, that’s not why I do it.)
Before I started blogging, I had what was in pre-blog days known as a Personal Website. My first site, called The Void, was started my sophomore year in high school in 1993 (when ‘blink’ was the biggest style controversy). Then I started my original blog (Slumbering Angry, so damn moody) in November 1999 and it lasted until April of 2000. Did all the updating by hand, which was tedious and why I stopped.
So on July 16th, 2000 I started X-Tra Rant. I got the domain through one of those “free” services that just puts your site in a frame and I hosted it on the Rose-Hulman servers, which funny enough, still hosts the original version of X-Tra Rant! I was going for a fake medication theme, like “X-Tra Rant will cure all your ails!” I still love the happy smiling kids on the splash page. All the updating and archiving was handled but a custom Perl script, something that would hold true until my conversion to MovableType on April 23, 2003.
