Articles to Write

Hi Asma, thanks for your note on my talk page. Let me answer the articles to write questions you asked.

  1. Can I write any article of my choice ? -- Sort of. The idea is that there are occasionally articles that we need written and that need to be done in house due to time constraints. We also will just have a list of articles needed to be written by anyone in the community that has an interest in that topic. We are still working out the details.
  2. Is there any specific style in writing this section? -- Again, we're still working out the details, but the idea is to create high quality writing of a journalistic nature on these pages. These article should be all original content (ie. it's okay to see and even quote from other articles like, Wikipedia, but the article shouldn't be a copy of the Wikipedia article. A good example might be the Google.com or Apple.com articles. Of course, some topics like, Keratotomy are might smaller articles like those.
  3. Is this particularly Wiki related item e.g if i want to write about a topic like 'Child Care' whether it will be alright? -- Like I said, we'll have a list of topics and articles to work on in the next week or so. Right now I'm just handling a lot of these, but if something comes up I can let you know.

Actually, if you'd like to try writing a piece for next week, you can try working on a better article for Public Domain. Here are some other websites that have information about what "Public Domain" means for research:

Once you've got the article written go ahead and add it to the wiki and let me know and I can take a look at it. If you don't want to do this article, that's probably alright it was the only one I could think off we really need right now -- just let me know if you are going to write it or not.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have further questions. -- TakKendrick | Talk

Hi Asma,

I just got your note about wanting to do an article on 'Public Awareness on Heart Diseases'. While it'd be nice to have you work on something in your interest area, right now the focus is on getting articles written based on things we've identified as needs. We're still trying to generate a good list of articles we need, so I can let you know more beyond "Public Domain" as they come up. -- TakKendrick

hi!

I got your note about needing something to work on. Tak has already told you about the issue of specific articles. I'd suggest you look at CommunityProjects and see if anything strikes your fancy. I'm partial to the projects I'm working on with Obed: Projects:ConsensusPollingAwareness and Projects:ConsensusPolls. Feel free to jump in on any of these projects, just know that they may not yet be clearly definied, so feel free to ask questions on teh project pages themselves, or let me know if you have other questions. peace, TedErnst

Hi again. Your signature seems to be broken. You might want to take a look at that. As for the Projects:RedesignEditPage, go ahead and add your name to that page and either just start to work, if you can tell what to do, or contact the people already on the list. Or just leave a note on that page expressing your interest. Also, I do NOT see an email from you. What's up? TedErnst

Keratotomy page

Hi Asma,

Wow, you did some great work. If you look at the history for the article for Keratotomy, I tried to just break it up a bit into relevant sections and moved the Table of Contents over so it'll be easier for readers to navigate.

A couple of specific thoughts:

  • Generally, we'd like these kinds of articles to really be only a few paragraphs/sections long. In my mind, this article might be better served broken into a few different smaller articles:
    • Keratotomy
    • Cornea and description
    • Eye disorders (which then links to the articles on Myopia, Hyperopia, and Astigmatism)
    • Techniques
    • Myopia
    • Hyperopia
    • Astigmatism
    • LASIK
    • You might break the various types of Keratotomy into separate articles, or just keep them in the one article, depending on your preference
The idea here is to provide "quick" reference info on Keratotomy, with then links inside the text to the other articles for further readings. This makes the wiki dynamic and is itself the big difference between writing for wiki and writing the longer more traditional papers you're probably more used to.
  • I also added the Category:LASIKTerm to the bottom of the article. You might look at the other terms and see if some of the great information you wrote might be more suited to be in those terms, or (again) might be a new term.

I do want to reiterate that you've got some great energy here and I think this has been a good project for you. Let's continue to work on this a little bit to fine tune it by looking at ways to split it up into more articles. My instinct here is to work more with you on this over the next week (maybe via Skype or IRC, or on talk pages if that makes more sense) to really polish these up and make a shining example of some definition pages.

-- TakCaricatureSm.jpg TakKendrick | Talk 13:38, 13 July 2007 (PDT)

P.S. On that note, your plan for Public Domain is a bit more than we'd thought we wanted (really I was thinking the article would be no more than 3 paragraphs, just a general overview, not as specific as you're suggesting). But, let's work on the LASIK/medical/Keratotomy stuff for right now, so don't worry about working on the Public Domain right now and then we can talk about what to do with that article at a later date.

Vaccination Article

Hi Asma, I was looking at a few of your edits and I noticed a few of the same grammatical issues coming up so I took the liberty of editing the Vaccination page. I would just take a look at the diff and see the small areas to improve. Your writing is great, but key areas to improve include comma use and proper spacing, spell-check, and avoiding complex syntax when a simple alternative exists. Thanks for your time and good luck. Health and Fitness Portal

I've been looking at this portal and I was wondering where you got this information from. It seems to be copied directly from somewhere but you have not mentioned the source. Did you check if it was copyright? Tanwir Shah

Hi Asma Khan, I was looking at this portal and I see you have put a lot of work into making it look good. I looked at the page Details_of_Power_Plate_Fitness_Machine. I see you have taken a lot of the article from a news report in Daily Record UK and I'm not sure if that is okay as the Terms and conditions on that site are confusing but
I think it would be great to have an article about Vibration Training in general rather than Power-Plate specifically as that is a Brand-Name and already has a page Power-Plate.us and others. There are many brands of Vibration Training Machines, some that are available only in Studios and others that can be purchased for home use. I go to a different Brand-Name studio and I think Vibration Training has a lot of benefits so it's great to feature it but maybe not about just one brand as that is misleading and an advertisement not really an article. Just my thoughts on this. --User:Di | talk 08:06, 30 July 2007 (PDT)

Hello again Asma Khan. I am writing an article on Vibration Training and I've linked it to the Health and Fitness portal that you are writing. Common Answers

Hello Asma, For me this project's importance is about creating quality content on the site. We have a record of what people are typing into the find bar & most of the time their queries are going unanswered. For example hundreds of people type "jobs" or "employment" into the find bar. What they get back from us is... well... nothing. If we know what folks are looking for and we create good pages to answer their questions they will tend to be curious and look around some more. However, if they ask a question & get no answer, they will most likely leave the site.

So, this project will lead people down the "path of adoption" from just landing on the site to becoming interested in the project & eventually becoming a contributor.

Does this make sense? Providing good content is one thing we can do to make the site interesting to folks. It's hard to know what it will take to get one individual to become an active member, but it most surely has to do with them finding quality content that means something to them. Julia

How is it related?

Please tell me how a Turkish web directory can possibly be related to WordPress.com. WordPress is a blog hosting software (and provider), and the site you (re-)added is a Turkish web directory. The two are completely unrelated. If there is some connection I'm unaware of, please let me know and I'll stop reverting. Nathan (talk) / 18:32, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

Food Pyramid Picture

Hi Asma I have been very busy as I am studying (Sports Performance Certificate) but I will finish the WhatIsVibrationTraining article sometime this week.
I couldn't find a food pyramid pic that you can use but I did find one that shows all the food groups. If you clink click on the very first one on this site It says it is "public domain" (that means free to use) You will need to copy that into the info box when you upload the pic to AboutUs. The site is Food pictures I know it's not what you are really looking for. --User:Di | talk 04:36, 7 August 2007 (PDT)

Hand of the Week

I was looking at the Palmistry portal, and it's really very fine, extremely informative and detailed. I was wondering, do you have any plans for something more interactive? For instance, if you're in touch with any palmistry enthusiasts, maybe we could have a separate section in which a picture of a hand could be put up every fortnight and the reading opened to discussion? Let me know if I can help in brainstorming, contacting people, or indeed in any other way. FatimaRaja 00:51, 28 August 2007 (PDT)

That is alot of work you are doing on the LA site. Looks good. Great Work!--Master Baitor 03:43, 31 August 2007 (PDT)

Category:Allied Health Professional

Asma,

The work you are doing here is very good. I love the quote and intro section, although I believe the latter could be tightened up a bit. The 'How do they work' section seems to me to be a good place to link to other category terms - for instance, to Category:Podiatrist instead of podiatrists.org (this latter link would be good on Category:Podiatrist!). In the personal reviews section, I would definitely include internal links to these sites as well so that the user can access a general description of them if he/she likes. The job sites section is very good, but has the opposite problem: in this case I would keep all of the internal links, but add external ones as well.

In terms of overall commentary, I really like your more article-esque approach to these pages! You're intuitions about the kind of written content that is appropriate are spot on, but I would encourage you to incorporate a little bit more of the 'top web search results for this term' feel (merge the two frameworks, I guess). I'm definitely interested to see what you say here, but do look at some of the other pages for an idea of what I'm talking about. Keep in mind, we're all just learning this together so any thoughts you have here on the format are extremely relevant. If you like, add them to the discussion section for task.

Thanks for all the great work! I'm excited to hear what your thoughts on this process are and discuss on the task page!

Asma, Great work so far on the San Jose page! I think the overall format is spot on, now it's just an issue of filling out the information on all of the specific links. I'll be on IRC tonight (Monday AM for you) if you want to talk more about it, or just send me a note on my talk page.

Common Answers

Asma,

I just wanted to check in with you on the work you've done so far for this weeks task. I think you've been doing some great work overall, but I also hoped to give you some input so we can discuss ways to make what you've already done that much better. I've left some notes below with my thoughts on things so far. Please feel free to respond to anything I say - your perspective on this is as valuable as mine, so we can try to convince each other what is best. At any rate, I'm hoping to see you continue this work over the next week so we can get these tasks to complete!

  • Category:Allied Health Professionals: Good overall article. Good work on redirecting the terms section to the category pages - it makes me think it might also be a good idea to follow these links one deep and create similar articles there. We may be choosing areas of focus, so this could be an option in the future for extended work on a given term. Good job with the internal links toward the end, although we need to keep external links there as well. If you just type in the external link with no title, then the numbers of external links on the page will accumulate and provide the user with a ranking system. The descriptions you've added to most links are great, but I think you might want to do it will all links on the page (thoughts here?).
  • Hairstyles: This looks like its going pretty well and I'm excited to see what you come up with here over the next week. I would think about moving this article to the Category:Hairstyles page and making it another CommonAnswers term, perhaps inculcating some of the information on the sites we have in that category into the description. I do think the page needs some images, but I wouldn't go overboard here. Since the topic is so big, I'd push to focus this article on linking to good providing this content ourselves. The key is to make our resource unique and different, and from my perspective this means we don't need to always do all of the explaining. Wikipedia (and other industry specific sites) take care of this and I think the most valuable thing we can do is catalogue where all this information exists. The question is where to find the best balance between this latter, search-oriented approach and providing all of the content ourselves. I think it is more efficient and valuable to focus on the former, particularly in areas where other sites have great content. I'd be interested to know your thoughts here.

[[*Category:Los Angeles: Again, I think this article has some great content and you've done some really great work here. My one concern is: many, many other sites have more extensive information than this, so it is unlikely we will ever be competitive with them in these areas. In light of this, i don't think our page needs to have a very long article - it might be better to tighten the organization to the search term. If I'm searching for 'Los Angeles', I'm interested in general information about the city (obviously), but this doesn't mean you need to list all statistics (I would search for 'Los Angeles Population', for instance, if I wanted that statistic). Think about what other information might be included in a more specific search term set, and you probably don't need to include it here. On the Category:Portland Oregon page I moved some of the content into more specific search terms (really, subcategories) that you can check out (Arts, entertainment, business, government etc.) We may not need to write long articles even when the search term is very broad - general terms might demand less explanation, and you can push this onto subpages as I've done here. Great job making the overall feel more 'searchy' as listings, but again I think you need to pair down the breadth of information included here and take it to subpages.

  • Category:Gardening: This article looks great - I love the layout and pictures! You need to cite these images though. I think the link structuring is good, but would be benefited by a small description of each link (at least for the top 10 results). My earlier comments about focusing the scope apply here as well: a lot of the link subsections you provide could (should) themselves be search terms that we're working on. I'd move some of this work to those pages to make this one a bit shorter and more focused.
  • Portal:Cheiros_Palmistry: This looks like it's going great, so I'll leave you to it! One suggestion: it would be nice to provide internal links in addition to the external ones here. This takes advantage of the information we have on all of these domains and allows the user to choose to read about the site first if they like (keep external links as well though!).
  • Category:Artificial: I think this one is hard, so good work on it so far. I like the intro quote, but I'm of the opinion that a factual (but personalized) statement might be more what we're looking for here (ideas on this?). I think the page looks about 70% done overall. I'd also focus the scope of this one - link to, for example, a page on artificial plants/trees instead of including these links here. This should focus the overall article and allow you to make it perfect.
  • Category:Archway: This is a wierd one too, so I'm glad you've taken it on. These cases will be very valuable in developing this process. It looks like you're just getting started on this on, so have at it!

Great job this week! We're really pushing to finish the tasks by the end of this period, so keep up the good work on these and the other terms you're planning on doing. Collect any general thoughts you have on the process (and some of your responses to my thoughts here) on the task page.

Thanks!

Chris

Asma,

Thanks for the response. I'm basing my claim on a visual reaction to some pages - compared to the standard doctor page, some felt a bit light on information. If this is the case on their site and the web (i.e. you can't find any more), then so be it. Here is an example you've done that I think is ideal in content (still needs a bit better formatting):

Asma,

It looks like you're doing great work! In regard to your questions:

1) Your search should include all of these types of companies. This is definitely valuable information (a break down of tech software companies), so tag each page with the appropriate category from your list and we can use this information to organize sub-pages later (i.e., IT Management Software Companies in Portland, Oregon). 2) If you can't confirm a bot generated email address, assume the information we have is correct and leave it as is. Unless, of course, it looks obviously wrong.

Keep on ricking!

"your" portal

Hi Asma,

Forgive me for being so pedantic about this. I feel I must. :-) While it makes a lot of sense for you to feel ownership over "your" portal, when you refer to it as "yours" to other people, you send them the message that it is not "theirs." And I think we all want the portal to be just as much theirs as it is yours, yes? Please let me know how you see this. Thanks! TedErnst | talk 07:29, 8 November 2007 (PST)

Asma, thank you for your note. I wasn't meaning to criticize you. We all learn together. That's what wiki is all about. I hope when you see me making similar errors in language (calling someone a "user" or somehow treating staff differently than others) that you will point it out to me so we can learn together. I learn from seeing your use of language whether I agree with it or not, and I hope you feel this is a learning experience as well, and one you can then pass on to others. Yes? Work in progress for PortlandTech

Asma,

In addition to the new page for the overall DoneDone status of pages (PortlandTech/DoneDone Pages - thanks to Mehr on that!), we're going to continue keeping track of individual work in progress on the task page now. So, for this period Build out PortlandTech (Nov. 1-15) has a section at the bottom where everyone can put the articles they are working on with a status (Done or In Progress) next to them. We can leave notes here on those that need improvement; DoneDone articles will be marked here and moved to PortlandTech/DoneDone Pages.

Let me know if you have any thoughts. Other than that I'll be in touch with you on the work via the task page! Thanks for the work so far!

PortlandTech/People

Asma,

Just a heads up - we've been categorizing people pages with a bit of a simpler format that allows for these tags to be expanded into other portals that you might want to check out. Instead of Category:PortlandTechPeople, simply categorize a person-page with: Category:PortlandTech and Category:Person. Then we can use the intersect tool to create a dynamic list without needing to create a new category. In addition to this, we've simplified the other people tag formats to mimic those on company pages:

Category:PortlandTechFounder turns into Category:Founder
Category:PortlandTechCEO turns into Category:CEO
Category:PortlandTEchVicePresident turns into Category:Vice President
etc....

These can all be intersected with Category:PortlandTech and to get more specific lists of the different people in the area. If you look at PortlandTech/People you'll see a basic rubric of the possible intersections - when the given tags are added to a page, it appears automatically in these lists.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on this, but I think it is a bit simpler and expands the universality of our tagging system the by using the intersect functionality.

InProgress vs. NeedsWork

Hi Asma,

Just a response to your question on my talk page. I think there might be some confusion, but to any extent it doesn't matter a lot (at least as far as you're concerned). In my mind:

  • InProgress -- just means we've identified the article and maybe done some work on it.
  • NeedsWork -- is suppose to mean it was added to "NeedsReview" but still needed work.

Basically, this was a) a way for us to determine how many pages that were ready to be reviewed were actually DoneDone or not AND b) a way to barn-raise around this, so that if we saw a bunch of pages in "NeedsWork" we could devote time and effort on those. As it happened, the number of pages that "NeedsWork" is much lower than I thought it would be and I'm not sure we need it for the purposes I planned, but still want to keep it for awhile to see if it has some other purpose.

Pages that I've reviewed that still need work, I put in both categories.

I hope this answers your questions.

If you get a chance, I put up a few more notes on seeding the SeattleTech project on the SeattleTech: Start project (Dec. 15-31) task page. I also got your note saying you've started another list too (maybe fuse the lists together?), so I think we'll be in good shape. Glad your taking a lead on this project. -- Tak

Adding Tags

Asma, in response to your note on my talk page:

I just want to confirm that i am putting SUBST:SeattleTechVentureCapital at the lower end of the page MentorUsa.com , is it the correct way to do that?

Absolutely right. As you can see on the MentorUSA.com page, what this did was then just add the Category:SeattleTech Category:Company and Category:Venture Capital tags (but all you had to do was just the one template. Additionally, it makes sure we're all using the same naming for the categories too. Keep up the great work. -- Tak

xjs.com

Asma Khan a link like [Shopping links] is a bit Spammy, unless the author has many links that they have picked selected on that page. All the links are to an affiliate program, not product sold on the WebLog. Igorberger 01:50, 27 December 2007 (PST)

Thnx

Jee thanx Asma, now why didn i think of that, so now i am back to tagging for today, i will start making pages tomorrow onwards.Sanwal 22:50, 31 December 2007 (PST)

answers to your questions from yesterday

Hey Asma,

I left a response to your questions on my Talk page as well as the one on the ContentLog. Let me know if you have any more questions. -- Tak

Re: Hi

Hiya there. =)

Sorry for slow response rate oO I am usually notified by email when I get a new message but wasn't. Looking through all my emails, no I didn't get an email about the American Heart Association. The last email I got regarding a heart was from Fabian Scott from Kanu.

SeattleTech

Hi Asma

Can you please send me the list of pages you worked on tomorrow for review.Ill put them in the DoneDone list after I review and check for minor edits.

Thanks

Mehr

Thanks for the list Asma.

The review is being done on a daily basis. So whatever pages you have worked on in one day just let me know what they are. This way I can check them right there and then and see what edits it needs and inform you or do them myself. The edits will be made the same day and thus the pages you work on in one day will all be done done by the end of the day.So keep me posted at least twice a day on whatever pages that you have worked on and needs review be it two pages or five or ten.The objective is to speed things up and do it in an effective way so that a page which is started on in the morning is completed by the end of the day after reviewing, editing if needed and one final review.

Seattle Tech Needs Work

Hey ASma I have reviewed some your pages and put them in the DoneDone list. The following pages needed the following minor edits. Please take a look and put them in DoneDone when you have filled out these missing details:

Removal of villarenters from PortlandTech

At MarkDilley's suggestion, I'm leaving notes here and on User talk:TedErnst that I edited Villarenters.com to remove the PortlandTech categories and badge. The Villarenters.com site looks like it's (1) based in Australia and the UK, so it's not related to Portland, and (2) simply a site for renting vacation homes, so it's not "Tech". If I missed something, and it really belongs in PortlandTech, please revert. -- Joe Cohen | Leave me a message 16:22, 13 March 2008 (PDT)

Hi Asma: Thanks for the message about villarenters & PortlandTech. Given the number of entries in PortlandTech, it's amazing to find only one that's out of place. The content team did a great job on that portal.
If you're working on VancouverTech, here are two suggestions:
  1. There are some sites with a mis-spelled category: Category:VancourverTech. If those sites have also been tagged correctly with Category:VancouverTech, it probably makes sense to remove the incorrect tag.
  2. You're probably aware of the difference between (a) Vancouver, BC, Canada, and (b) Vancouver, state of Washington, USA. They are unrelated and about 400km from each other. The only reason I'm mentioning this is that I noticed the VancouverTech tag for Schwabe.com; I didn't know whether this was (a) simply a result of their office in Vancouver, Washington, or (b) a deliberate decision to add them to VancouverTech.

Regarding an edit made from my user account

Hello. I've contacted you in regard to an issue on which I have detailed here. I failed to get some help there, so I have contacted you. Perhaps you could help me. I would like to know from what IP this edit has been made. My boss keeps asking me for this info, as he presumes the edit was made by a former employe (member) of our research platform. Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks. Arheoinvest 02:45, 23 May 2008 (PDT)
